The Society was founded in 1981 by W. Hunter Saussy and a small group of Bluffton residents. Many were descendants of the early families of the town and area. The first constitution of the BHPS simply stated the objective: "To bring together people interested in history, and especially in the history of Bluffton and its vicinity." In the beginning, the initial work of the Society entailed research and the marking of historical buildings, sites, and monuments. 27 were identified and so marked. In 1996 the Bluffton Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1997 the Caldwell Award was created. It was named for Ben and Betsy Caldwell, founders and officers in 1981, the award honors exceptional examples of historic preservation. In 1998 the Society purchased the Cole-Heyward House on Boundary Street to provide a showcase for historical restoration and preservation. Each year thousands of residents and visitors learn about the history and culture of Bluffton at this house museum and official welcome center. In 1999 we worked closely with the local Town Council to gain passage of the Historic Preservation Ordinance and the creation of an Historic Protection Overlay District within the original one square mile of Bluffton. Today our Society is involved in preservation, restoration, and education. We're in our second quarter-century of leadership.
